The Migliarino Natural Park, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli

 

On the coastal strip of the provinces of Pisa and Lucca is the natural park of Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli; a protected area that extends through the towns of Pisa, Viareggio, San Giuliano Terme, Vecchiano, Massarosa and Livorno and includes several protected areas.

To the north there is the Macchia Lucchese, a wooded area between Viareggio, Torre del Lago and the coast. The lake and the surrounding marsh area are part of the Massaciuccoli area; then there are the reclaimed areas, the Fattoria di Vecchiano and the Fattoria di Massaciuccoli. The park also includes the estates of Migliarino, San Rossore, Tombolo and Coltano and the Secche della Meloria.

Inside the park the woods prevail with holm oaks, pines and poplar trees; then there are dunes and marsh areas in which a rare flora is found.

The animal species are varied, there is a rich variety of birds like the mallard, the various types of herons, the gulls, the ducks, the cormorants, the woodpeckers. There are reptiles and amphibians, in the aquatic fauna the eel, the mullet and the red crayfish of Louisiana. Here also live several mammals like the fallow deer, the boar the rabbit and the fox; for some years now it is also certain the presence of the wolf.
